Community Programs Manager
Hello,
My name is Delano Androzzo, Community Programs Manager at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago and curator of the AfroFolk Live! series, a FREE weekly concert series celebrating the music and culture of the African Diaspora.
The Old Town School is a not-for-profit organization that teaches and celebrates music and cultural expressions rooted in the traditions of diverse American and global communities. The AfroFolk Live! series is FREE to the public and is intended to showcase a variety of music from throughout the African Diaspora.
The AfroFolk Live series is a wonderful community event which promotes the development of music and local musicians. We normally work with local musicians presenting the "folk" music of their respective communities. The series is full of variety and our goal is to generate excitement for the music of the immigrant and African-American communities which are represented in the series.
The Old Town School of Folk Music is a very unique organization and serves a unique role in the community. It is the largest independent non-profit school of music in the world, serving over 6000 students weekly. We have a small intimate concert hall which seats 450 and has some of the finest acoustics in Chicago. There are many other great things I could tell you about this place but I don't want to write a super-long email so I'll keep it short.
We have a limited budget for the concerts we present and I'm hoping there is a possibility we could work with you to collaborate in some way. My goal is to make AfroFolk Live the hottest community event to hit Chicago in years.
We have 36 FREE concerts planned for the 2004 season, Saturdays (Mar - Apr and Sep - Oct) at the South Shore Cultural Center (Chicago Park District) and Wednesdays (May - July and Nov - Dec) at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Thanks. Look forward to speaking with you.....
Please check our website for more info about AfroFolk Live and the Old Town School of Folk Music www.afrofolk.org

Thank You!! Sincerely, Delano

BLACK PRESIDENT: THE ART AND LEGACY OF FELA ANIKULAPO-KUTI
A group exhibition on view at the New Museum of Contemporary Art
July 11-September 28, 2003
New York, NY (May 20, 2003) - The New Museum of Contemporary Art announces Black President: The Art and Legacy of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, a group exhibition exploring the cultural impact of the famous Nigerian musician and activist who died in 1997. Thirty-four artists will examine and respond to this cultural icon through approximately forty works of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, mixed media and sound installation, video, film, computer animation, and music. Guest curated by Trevor Schoonmaker, Black President will be on view from July 11-September 28, 2003.
Musician and activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti created Afrobeat, the infectious fusion of American funk and jazz with traditional Yoruba and highlife music. Through politically-charged lyrics, electrifying stage performances, and his counter-culture lifestyle, Fela preached against social injustice and corruption. Troubled by the political and economic corruption of Nigeria and the repressive governments of sub-Saharan Africa, Fela built a commune called the Kalakuta Republic, which he declared immune from Nigerian law, and created his own political party. At the height of his popularity in the mid-1970s, Fela took to calling himself the "Black President." Since his death in 1997 from an AIDS-related illness, Fela`s status as a pan-African icon has continued to grow.
Black President is a critical multimedia exploration of the influence and artistic legacy of Fela. Artists included in this exhibition are from countries as diverse as Burundi, Cameroon, Chile, Côte d`Ivoire, England, Germany, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and the United States. Some, like album cover artist, Ghariokwu Lemi, and photographer, Femi Osunla, were part of Fela`s artistic retinue in Lagos. Other younger participating artists were not yet born. Their work speaks to the many sides of Fela-musical pioneer, political dissident, utopian visionary, consummate showman, husband to 28 women, and legendary lover.
Artists included in the exhibition are: Radcliffe Bailey, Bili Bidjocka, Sanford Biggers, Sokari Douglas Camp, Nanga Oly Christophe, Brett Cook-Dizney, Victor Ekpuk, Tim Evans & Jason Smith, Kendell Geers, Barkley Hendricks, Satch Hoyt, Alfredo Jaar, Marcia Kure, Moshekwa Langa, Ghariokwu Lemi, Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky, Adia Millett, Wangechi Mutu, Aimé Ntakiyica, Odili Donald Odita, Olu Oguibe, Moyo Ogundipe, Moyo Okediji, Senam Okudzeto, Ouattara, Yinka Shonibare, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Iké Udé, Obiora Udechukwu, Roberto Visani, Kara Walker & Klaus Bürgel, and Fred Wilson.
Tour
Black President: The Art and Legacy of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti will travel to the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Franciso (April 17-July 4, 2004) and to the Barbican Centre in London, England (September 9-October 24, 2004).

Funding available: The Global Film Initiative
The Global Film Initiative was created to promote cross-cultural understanding through the medium of cinema. Although American film continues to thrive in the global marketplace, developing world filmmaking has suffered from shifting economic conditions in film financing and distribution. As a result, audiences in the United States have been denied the rich cultural lessons these films have to offer.
We are currently accepting applications for feature film production and distribution grants. The application is available on our web site and the deadline is August 15, 2003.

Call for entries: Dahlonega International Film Festival
Located in Dahlonega, Georgia - USA, just north of Atlanta. The DIFF hopes to receive more films from South Africa for our 2003 festival (26 June - 29 June).
The DIFF is for filmmakers from all over the world who like to execute good concepts that play well. The DIFF doesn't see short film as the thing we make when we don't have enough funding for a feature, or as a way of killing time until we "hit it big," or at least gain entrance into a Park City Mall festival. The DIFF shows the work people want to make, not what they think "people with clout" want to see.
The DIFF encourages entrants to submit their work as early as possible:
Final Submission: Posted by April 15, 2003.
